Crate Wire / Box-Binding Wire

Crate Wire / Box-Binding Wire

Crate Wire and Box-Binding Wire Manufacturer

Crate wire and box-binding wire are low-carbon steel wires that fasten wooden slats and panels to cleats, forming wirebound boxes and crates. Selecting the correct gauge, coating grade, and stiffness for the application is a technical decision that affects both production efficiency and container performance.

WCJ Pilgrim Wire manufactures crate wire and box-binding wire at our ISO 9001:2015-certified facility in York, Pennsylvania. Our electroplating process delivers precise control of coating thickness and a smooth, consistent surface finish that feeds cleanly through box-binding machinery.

Read on to learn more about crate wire and box-binding wire specifications, applications, and how to select the right galvanized coating grade for your production needs.

Benefits of Crate and Box-Binding Wire

Wirebound construction has been a standard in industrial packaging for nearly 100 years. The combination of wood and wire produces a container that outperforms alternatives:

  • Rough-handling resistance: Wirebound boxes withstand greater rough handling than nailed wood boxes under equivalent load conditions.
  • Reduced material weight: Wirebound construction uses less wood than nailed boxes, reducing shipping tare weight without sacrificing structural performance.
  • Weather resistance: Unlike corrugated containers, wirebound boxes retain their structural integrity when wet or stored in high-humidity environments.
  • Stackability: The construction allows high stacking, easy palletizing, and efficient handling by conveyor, forklift, or hand truck.
  • Flat-pack shipping: Wirebound containers ship to the end user in knocked-down form and are assembled on-site with simple hand tools.
  • Visual inspection: The open-slat design allows for product inspection during transit and storage without opening the container.

Premium Crate and Box-Binding Wire From WCJ Wire

At WCJ Pilgrim Wire, we manufacture commercial galvanized and Class 1 galvanized low-carbon steel wire for wirebound box and crate production. Our ZnShield™ process produces standard zinc electroplated wire at the commercial galvanized grade. For applications requiring a heavier zinc coating, our ZnShield+™ delivers the increased coating weight to meet Class 1 galvanized requirements.

Our electroplating process provides precise control of coating thickness and a smooth, consistent surface. Surface consistency is critical in box-binding production because wire with irregularities causes wear and feed problems at the fastening machine. Class 1 galvanized wire is the appropriate choice for military packaging compliance, outdoor storage, or extended pre-use storage conditions.

All wire is manufactured from US steel at our ISO 9001:2015 facility located in York, Pennsylvania. Buyers requiring wire built to specific tensile strength or stiffness parameters can work with our custom wire team to develop a product matched to their machinery and container specifications.

Crate Wire and Box-Binding Wire Specifications

Binding wire uses gauges 11 through 17, and stapling wire runs in gauges 14 through 20. The table below covers the binding wire range, including physical dimensions and weight data, as per Package Research Laboratory Bulletin 309.

Gauge Diameter (in) Diameter (mm) lb/ft ft/lb
11 0.1205 3.061 0.0387 25.84
12 0.1055 2.680 0.0296 33.78
13 0.0915 2.324 0.0223 44.84
14 0.0800 2.032 0.0170 58.82
15 0.0720 1.829 0.0138 72.46
16 0.0625 1.588 0.0104 95.15
17 0.0540 1.372 0.0077 129.87

Industries & Applications That Use Crate and Box-Binding Wire

Wirebound containers are primarily used in two markets: military and defense packaging, and commercial/industrial packaging.

  • Military and Defense: Wirebound crates are among the most widely used packaging types in U.S. Army and Marine Corps logistics and are manufactured to specification PPP-B-585D.
  • Small Arms Ammunition: Common calibers packaged in wirebound crates include 5.56mm, 9mm, .45 caliber, and 7.62mm cartridges.
  • Ordnance and Munitions: Mortar rounds, grenades, fuzes, artillery munitions, rockets, explosives, and missile components all ship in wirebound containers.
  • Produce and Food Packaging: Standard commercial applications include fruits, vegetables, and seafood packed in wirebound containers.
  • Industrial Supply: Bulk bins, pallet containers, and general industrial supply crates represent the broader non-military application set.

Galvanized Coating Selection for Crate and Box-Binding Wire

The zinc coating on galvanized crate wire is specified by minimum coating weight, measured in ounces of zinc per square foot of wire surface. Regular (commercial) galvanized wire carries no specified minimum coating weight and is the baseline grade. Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 coatings carry progressively heavier minimums. The table below shows minimum zinc coating weights by gauge for Regular and Type 1 (Class 1) galvanized wire (as per Bulletin 309).

Gauge Regular Coating (oz/ft²) Type 1 / Class 1 Coating (oz/ft²)
11 No specified minimum 0.30
12 No specified minimum 0.30
13 No specified minimum 0.30
14 No specified minimum 0.25
15 No specified minimum 0.15
16 No specified minimum 0.15
17 No specified minimum 0.15

Regular galvanized wire is sufficient for most standard commercial and industrial wirebound applications. Class 1 galvanized wire is the appropriate specification for military packaging, outdoor storage environments, high-humidity warehousing, or any application where the container will be stored for extended periods before use.
